I went to the Georgia Department of Driver Services this morning before work to get my driver's license renewed. My current license was to expire in June, and I don't want to be on the trail with an expired license. Not that I will need it while hiking, but I'll need it in case I rent a car during a "zero day," need to show a valid ID to rent a hotel/hostel room in a town, or am in dire need of a frosty beverage. Anyway, I waited my hour to get to the counter to renew. I get up there and the lady was very friendly and expedient in her work. I was then told to sit back down and wait for it to print out. Five or so minutes later the lady calls my name. As I was walking up to the counter, I noticed the lady was folding a piece a paper. She then proceeded to hand me the paper, and say my ID will be mailed in 3 to 4 weeks. Well crap, I start the trail in less than two. So now I am stuck with a sheet of paper that is supposed to be my driver's license for the next month and will somehow have to figure out how to get my new license mailed to me.
In order for the state of GA to save money, I guess we have now outsourced the new GA driver's licenses to a company overseas. My license is probably being hand made in a far away land and will be on a cargo ship for the next two to three weeks. GA DDS, seriously, why don't you have a machine in your building that prints out my license? Heck, I'm even willing to wait an extra 30 minutes in an uncomfortable plastic chair for it to be made in the new high tech, non-counterfeit fashion. Until then, we'll see how far my paper ID goes until someone deems it as not being a real ID.

Wow, Brian this is so cool that you're doing this!
ReplyDeleteOne of our nieces through hiked and loved the experience - it was hard but she loved it. She graduated from college in Maine in May and she and two friends set out the next day and finished in GA just before Thanksgiving. They only went off for a few days a couple of times.
God be with you and bless you for being his feet!

Well I am glad to see that you are doing well and that the trail fairies have found you. Mom and I have been reading your posts and checking out your progress. She said that she would have a whole box of popsicles for you when you reach your finishing point. Excited to follow your porgress and BE CAREFUL! :)
