April 4 - 3 / 207.7 miles

Today was a somewhat easy three miles. Last night we stayed at DM's Grandmother's. The hospitality was great and her grandmother was even cooler. Today I got up and had a bagel and fresh fruit that she provided. I tehn spent the next few hours trying to get pictures on to the blog. I think I got about a third of them. I'll try to get more uploaded on the next zero day. For lunch we had spaghetti, asparagus, brocolli, carrots, and homemade coconut cake. It wasn't as good as my mom's, but it was a very close second.

We packed up our bags and headed back to Newfound Gap. I think I was asleep for most of the ride. At the Gap, I spent quite a time talking to tourist. Most were hesitant to ask questions. Once I would notice them staring at my pack, I would tell them it was ok to ask me whatever they wanted. I spoke to a group of about 10 people for 20 minutes. I enjoy talking to people that don't know too much about the trail. Most try to apologize for wanting to ask questions which I find funny.

We finally got on the trail around 5:30. We hit snow again, but it was nothing like going over Clingman's Dome. We got to Icewater Spring Shelter pretty quickly. I expected it to be crowded, but it isn't too bad. There are 5 thru hikers and 6 students from Davidson College. We plan to do 13 miles tomorrow and 15 the following day. That will get us through the Smokies. By that time we might try to meet back up with Dark Star and his family. They are planning on getting a cabin.

I spoke with DS briefly. He and Super Mike are going to go ahead and push to Hot Springs, NC. He will meet up with his family there.

Until then, have a good night.

  1. Hope you get to make it over to Charlie's Bunyon or the Jumpoff while you're on that part of the trail. Both provide pretty awesome views.

  2. Hot Springs is awesome! If you go you should definitely make use of the facilities. I have been twice.
